Theme and Purpose:

This is going to be a first High Adventure outing for some 6th and 7th grade scouts who have successfully completed an earlier weekend trip with the troop.  For older Scouts this is a final training session for Philmont later this summer.

We have the opportunity to use Leave No Trace camping techniques learned in April at back country camping sites.

Water issues will be a factor on this trip in its dryer climate.  We’ll be paying special attention to water sources, purification and conservation.

We hope to start our days early, leaving evening time for fishing, Bouldering level rock climbing skills.

Navigators will get in depth GPS training and usage, all scouts will review basic map and compass with Topographical map of the area.  Need 1 topo map per buddy pair.

We are entertaining the idea of running a base camp for non- hiking scouts pending Adult support and scout interest.

We will be working on our Annual Plan during the drive to and from.

Personal Packing Considerations – Day Pack for Traveling

We have updated our web site’s Backpacking checklist  Please review it.

In addition to that I would like people to remember bring the following:

Scout Handbook:  for anyone who is not First Class

2004 Philmont Guidebook:  Anyone going on to that.  We’ll be reviewing this on the trail

First Aid Merit Badge:  Everyone has to re-take that test.  Print it out.  Bring a book,  we’ll work on it in the car

Car Lunch:  Pack a snack and a care lunch for the road.

Water – No Soda:  Be sure you have a nalgene full of water for the road.

Traveling in Outdoors Class A’s:  no exceptions,

Leisure Reading:  Get yourself a good book or magazines, it’s a long drive.
